Mark Your Calendars for the Schedule of Services at St. Photios Chapel

Father George Ioannou, Chaplain of St Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine announces the schedule of services to be observed in the St Photios Chapel, located on 41 St. George Street in St. Augustine, FL.

Supplications to the Virgin Mary at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 1st and 8th; 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4, October 2, November 6 and December 4; Matins and Divine Liturgy will be held on Monday, October 28; and the Blessing of the Animals will be held Saturday, December 7 from 10-2:00 p.m.

On August 15th, the Assumption- also known as the Dormition of the Theotokos will be celebrated at Holy Trinity, CR 214, St Augustine with matins and divine liturgy beginning at 9 a.m. The Orthodox Church proclaims that the Mary, the Theotokos, has been assumed by God into the heavenly kingdom of Christ.  This Great Feast commemorates the death, resurrection and glorification of Christ's mother by entering into a 2-week strict fast period.

Beginning on August 1st, we also remember the "Queen of all the saints and angels" in prayer.  The Paraklesis, or the service of supplications has two meanings - the first is consolation.  Another name for the Holy Spirit is Paraclete or Consoler.  The second is supplication or petition.  The goal of the service is to obtain consolation and strength through the intercession of the Bearer of God.

Paraklesis is offered every evening at 6:00 p.m. Holy Trinity with the parish joining the faithful at the Shrine on August 1st and 8th.  The fast will culminate with the Feast of the Assumption of the Theotokos with Great Vespers at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14th and matins and divine liturgy beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 15th.  These services will be held at Holy Trinity.

Matins and Divine Liturgy are celebrated every Sunday at Holy Trinity beginning at 8:30 a.m.  For further information, call St Photios Shrine at 904 829 8205.

Monday through Friday

For Early Childhood Educators

A two week immersion course is offered at Hellenic College

June 10 - 21, 2013

Monday through Friday

9:30 - 4:00

Endorsements:

His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta and His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston have offered their blessings for this program. Dr. Anton Vrame, Director of the Religious Education Department for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, endorses the course and hopes to see it flourish.

Fostering the spiritual formation of Orthodox children means beginning as early as possible.  The classroom, called the Children's Room, is a specially prepared environment designed to satisfy the child's natural inclination to movement and to spirituality by providing hands-on biblical and liturgical activity.

The course provides adults with all that is necessary to set up a proper weekly program or a home school religious curriculum.

Christmas Advent - So What?

Relating the Holy Days of our Faith to the Life of the World We Live In

As Orthodox Christians, we begin the celebration of the Nativity of Christ with a time of preparation.  This 40-day Lenten period to purify both soul and body, is also known as the Nativity Fast or Advent.  During this time, the theme of the approaching Nativity is introduced in the services, and on November 21, the eve of the Feast of the Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple, we hear the first announcement from the nine hymns (irmoi) of the Christmas Canon:  "Christ is Born!  Glorify Him!" As we pray, fast, repent and anticipate, we now join the mood of joy within our Church, we see the first light of the greatest possible Gift of gifts, the coming of God into His world.

"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."
